A parent of a young elementary-school boy with ADHD and autism reports giving vitamin D as part of nutritional therapy. Blood levels stayed low, so the dose was raised, and no clear improvement was seen.

In ADHD, vitamin D added to methylphenidate gave a small symptom improvement, but the evidence quality is low. For autism, the benefit is still unclear.

      Cautions

      Side effects in reviews

The one review we collected mentions no side effects. That doesn't mean there are none.

Call emergency services or go to the ER right away if your child

        • struggles to breathe or is wheezing
        • has swelling of the face, lips or tongue
        • becomes confused or has a seizure

If an unusual change lasts more than a few days, tell your child's doctor.

        Where this comes from

We only pick posts in which parents describe trying something with their own child, from public parent forums and personal blogs. We don't copy the posts: we pull out the result, duration and side effects, write a short summary, and link every review to its original. These are parents who chose to write, so the numbers may differ from the real picture.
